The making of the Coachella Song

To everybody driving out to the desert now:
I absolutely love Coachella. That’s why I wrote the Coachella Song. For me, it symbolizes the beginning of summer. When it’s still a little damp in L.A., the heat is on out there in the desert. The drive to Coachella is so exciting and uplifting, and the Coachella Song is the natural outcome of that emotion. I wrote the Coachella Song in 2007. I had just started to write lyrics and produce music–I wrote twenty songs within a couple of months. One of them was the Coachella Song. My intention was to create dark, industrial dance music, the antidote to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. Massive Attack with a dance beat, but without losing the magic and sensuality. However, the sensuality ended up getting replaced with a bit of roughness. Often I am accused by my girlfriend of not being very sensual and romantic. The Coachella Song, though, is a little lighter than “Worship”. I do find romanticism in old rusted, industrial warehouses, which is intensely reflected in my Overpainted Photographs. The Coachella Song was sitting on the shelf until last Sunday, when I called my partner in Cologne, Dirk Nikolai, with whom I had produced Worship, along with Robert Crash (Eurythmics), in November 2008 in Cologne. I said, let’s make a Coachella Song happen now. I asked Dirk if he had any exciting tracks, and he said that he just had finished something “fresh,” that’s what he calls it. He emailed it to me and I tried to match it with my Coachella Song lyrics. It worked. We jammed a couple of times over Skype and mastered it today, Thursday, April 15. So, I hope you guys enjoy it while you are driving out to the desert.
Let’s go,
Alex
